Helping High-Performers Live With Greater Purpose Through an Athlete’s Mindset

Helping High-Performers Live With Greater Purpose Through an Athlete’s Mindset

There are some conversations that stay with you long after the microphone is off.

This was one of them.

On GrowthReady, I had the privilege of speaking with Alison Hadden — a marketing leader, lifelong athlete, and someone whose mindset was forged through challenge, sharpened through leadership, and tested in the hardest ways life can test a person. Alison shared how an athlete’s mindset shaped the way she led through challenges in business and how that same mindset carried her through cancer, uncertainty, and some of life’s hardest moments.

Over a 20-year career, Alison built a reputation for thriving in high-growth environments, leading teams, embracing first-of-their-kind opportunities, and bringing intensity, grit, and purpose into every room she entered. She spoke about choosing culture over title, betting on environments that brought out her best, and hiring people with resilience, competitiveness, and a willingness to keep showing up when things got hard.

That mindset was not limited to business.

When Alison was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, she approached treatment the same way an athlete approaches a demanding training block: with honesty, discipline, structure, and a focus on the next step. She talked about making a plan, staying physically active where she could, and holding onto the habits that reminded her who she was even when life felt unfamiliar.

That landed deeply with me.

Because high performance is not just about how you show up when things are going well. It is about who you become when life strips away your comfort, control, and certainty.

Alison did not speak from theory. She spoke from lived experience. And what stood out most was her refusal to drift into helplessness. She kept coming back to the same kind of questions athletes and leaders both need to ask:

What can I control today?
What is the next move?
How do I stay present in the middle of pressure?

That is a lesson every leader needs.

Too often, people lose themselves trying to manage the full weight of the future. Alison’s example reminds us that resilience is built differently. It is built by staying in the moment. It is built by responding instead of spiraling. It is built by taking ownership of the next indicated step.

She also reminded us that environment matters.

Not every workplace brings out your best. Not every team fits how you are wired. Alison was clear about the importance of culture, energy, and shared standards. She knew that if she was going to perform, lead, and build at a high level, she needed to be in environments that valued grit, adaptability, and action.

That is a GrowthReady principle.

The right environment does not just make work easier. It makes excellence more possible.

And then there is the message at the center of this episode — the one that still hits with full force:

Live like there is no time to waste.

Alison passed away in January 2022, but her message continues to impact people in a profound way. At the heart of this episode is a message that still resonates deeply today: live like there is no time to waste.

Not in a rushed way.
Not in a fear-driven way.
In a clear way.

A way that forces you to ask better questions about how you are spending your life.

Are you giving your energy to what matters most?
Are you leading with intention?
Are you still waiting for the “right time” to make the change, have the conversation, or pursue the thing that matters to you?

That is why this episode still matters.

Alison’s story is not just about adversity. It is about awareness. It is about presence. It is about using your life well while you have it.

That is what I want GrowthReady listeners and readers to take from this conversation.

Bring the athlete’s mindset into your leadership.
